New Orleans

This image of the St. Charles Streetcar reminds me of how timeless the city of New Orleans can feel. The architecture, the food, and the music have a quality and presence that takes you back to the past and keeps you in the present all at once. I highly recommend visiting at least once in your life. You will not regret it!
Impermanence
Part Two

This was Shea Stadium. My wife and I took a subway ride out to see it as it was being torn down. My father and I took that same subway line to see the Mets play when I was a child.

As an adult, I got to return the favor and travelled the 7 line with Dad to see many ball games. The stadium was another place holder of my relationship with my father. Ii too, is now long gone.
Impermanence
Part One

I lost my father in 2002. Fort Monmouth, my Dad’s workplace, was the military base near my hometown. In 2005 it was slated for closure by the Base Realignment and Closure Commission. Many of the buildings are being torn down including this one. The Hexagon, as it was known, was a place shrouded in mystery for me. My Dad’s work was classified and thus I was never allowed in. This is the image I have of the building, surrounded by barbed wire fencing and just slightly out of focus.
It is now a pile of rubble, reinforcing in my mind that nothing is permanent in life. Not even the structures that serve as a place holder in my memory of my father.
This image was made from the Governor’s Island Oyster bar.
As a child I always imagined about the lives of the people taking the Staten Island Ferry. They must all work in Manhattan, but who are they? Are they going home? Another job? Headed to dinner with loved ones? Facing a lonely microwaved dinner in front of the television?
These thoughts still pass through my mind when I see these ships.
Enjoy your week!
Umbrellas in New York…

Have you ever tried to walk through New York City while wielding an umbrella? This may seem like a fairly easy task, but I have never managed to accomplish the art in any graceful manner. I’m always bumping into other umbrellas, splashing water on myself, or getting stuck in doorways as I try to close the thing! I’ve also come close to losing an eyeball from other pedestrians that pay no attention as to where the spikes of their umbrellas are pointing.
Now this gentleman certainly seems to have the art mastered, and he can do it while checking his cell phone!
Have a great week everyone!
On Tour!
This gentleman was on a tour of an unknown variety in downtown Manhattan. He looked bored with the tour guide’s information and was perhaps plotting his escape.
A friend of mine and I did just that on a tour of Antwerp Belgium. The bus (God help me a bus tour) pulled up in front of a lace factory so we could all buy some souvenir lace to take home. Now there is nothing wrong with a lace factory, but for two guys in their twenties well…! Anyway, we escaped to a local cafe for a beer and caught up with the tour later.
Have a great week everyone!
Lost in the city!
Michelle and I went to New York this weekend. The city is like a second home to the two of us, but can be very daunting to those visiting from out of town. I’ve been in this situation many time in foreign cities and it is a little frightening. Fortunately, I’ve been helped out by the locals. A gentleman in London actually took twenty minutes out of his day to walk my friend and I to our hotel. Therefore, we always try to help out folks who are lost in New York.
This is an image I made on my way to work last year. Those who live by the shore will recognize the location as Avon.
Have a great week everyone!
Hi folks!
Sadly, we have not been keeping up with our blog of late. We had planned to blog our trip to New Orleans back in December, but that never materialized. Michelle has been very involved with work, so once agin you will have to suffer with my lousy writing.
This photo I took with my brand new camera…the Canon EOS R. It’s very different for me because it is a mirrorless camera. That means it’s much lighter and great for travel. I captured this image through a window in a pizza place called Harry’s Italian in lower Manhattan.
I plan tp keep posting photos once a week until Michelle gets back to blogging. I hope you enjoy them!
